History and context
The story behind Kundalpur Jain Temples
Wikipedia reports that, in the Digambara tradition, Kundalpur is the birthplace of Mahavira, and that other traditions and modern scholarship place his birthplace at Basukund near Vaishali. The site has an ancient temple, known as Simhamukhi Teela, which houses a 4.5-foot image of Mahavira, and a modern complex of five temples established in 2003.
Jain Heritage Centres adds that Kundalpur is also described as the birthplace of Gautam Swami and of three of Mahavira's eleven chief disciples.

Why it matters
Why Kundalpur Jain Temples is worth your time
Kundalpur rounds out the Jain circuit around Nalanda: birth at Kundalpur in Digambar belief, nirvana at Pawapuri, and teaching across Rajgir's hills. Seeing it alongside Pawapuri gives a sense of how the tradition maps Mahavira's life onto this stretch of Bihar.
It is also a useful lesson in how pilgrimage sites are identified: tradition, archaeology and later construction overlap. The modern complex was established in 2003, while an older shrine survives, and the site continues to grow as a centre for pilgrims.

How to experience it
Combine Kundalpur with Nalanda: the temples are roughly 1.6 to 2.5 km from the ancient ruins, so a driver can do both in one morning. There are two main complexes, the ancient Mahavir Janma Bhumi complex and the larger modern Nandyavartha Mahal complex, about 200 metres apart.
In the older complex a small shrine marks the traditional birthplace. In the modern complex, the main shrine has a tall shikhara and holds images of Mahavira, Rishabhanatha and Gautama Swami, and a separate hall displays 72 images of Jinas from the past, present and future cycles.
Take your time at the pushkarni tanks nearby and ask the staff about the history of the site. Remember that Digambar tradition places Mahavira's birth here, while Svetambara tradition and many scholars place it at Basukund near Vaishali, so you will hear different accounts depending on whom you ask.
