Why it matters

Why Evergreen Vegetarian House is worth your time

Chinese Buddhist vegetarian shops are a different option from Little India's Indian restaurants, and this one is aimed at ordinary diners rather than visitors. Its value is the range: a family can mix tofu, vegetables, noodles and curry on one plate without ordering to a menu.

It is a long-standing neighbourhood shop in the sense that Time Out listed it in 2014 and Spinach lists it today, but neither source gives a founding date. Because the egg status is uncertain, it suits flexible vegetarians better than strict ones.

How to experience it

Spinach describes a Chinese vegetarian buffet with more than thirty vegetarian dishes, priced by plate weight, with a typical meal near 10 ringgit, a figure to treat as indicative. Rice is often included. Popular items include homemade mock meats, steamed buns, tofu dishes, vegetarian curries, noodle soups, glutinous rice chicken and rice dumplings.

Time Out, writing in 2014, called it a godsend for vegetarians and vegans and noted the range of meat substitutes alongside plain vegetable, potato and tofu dishes. The shop also sells dry vegetarian food products.

Spinach says reviews describe the food as generally free of egg, milk and honey, but labelling is inconsistent and its vegan options are rated poor. Ask staff which items are egg and dairy free, and about sauces and broths, because we cannot confirm a Pure Veg or Vegan tag.

Plan with confidence

Small checks that make a better meal.

  • Bring cash
  • Ask staff which dishes are egg and dairy free
