The short answer

National Museum of Cambodia: what visitors should know first

Yes, especially if you will not reach Angkor. Allow about 1.5 hours, go in the morning, and use the courtyard for a rest. Check the current opening hours and ticket price.

History and context

The story behind National Museum of Cambodia

The foundation stone was laid on 15 August 1917, and the museum was inaugurated on 13 April 1920. The French scholar George Groslier designed it, drawing on forms from Khmer temple architecture and bas-reliefs. It was renovated in 1968.

Why it matters

Why National Museum of Cambodia is worth your time

The museum holds more than 14,000 items, from prehistory to the Khmer Empire and later. It gives context to Indian influence on Cambodia, from Hindu deities and epics to the sculptural conventions of Angkor, and it is easier on older visitors than the temples themselves.

It is also a survivor. The museum was inaugurated in 1920 and continued through war and the Khmer Rouge period, and objects have been returned from overseas in recent years, including a 10th-century Uma sculpture repatriated in 2024.

Highlights

What not to miss

An 11th-century bronze from the West Mebon at Angkor.

  2. 02

    The courtyard garden

A shaded square with a pool and benches.

  3. 03

    Hindu and Buddhist sculpture

Figures of Vishnu, Shiva, Ganesha and Uma that Indian visitors know.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Enter from the street on the corner near the palace and walk straight into the courtyard garden, which is the museum's calmest spot. The galleries run around it, with sculpture arranged by period so you can follow Khmer art from pre-Angkorian times to the Angkor era and later.

Look for the bronze reclining Vishnu from the West Mebon at Angkor, the stone Garuda in the Koh Ker style and the statue known as the Leper King. Indian visitors will recognise Vishnu, Shiva, Ganesha and Uma, which makes the museum a good primer on how Hindu and Buddhist ideas shaped Cambodia.

Rest in the courtyard halfway through, then finish the galleries. If you plan to visit Angkor later, this is a useful first stop; if you will not go, it is the best substitute in the country for a morning with Khmer sculpture.
