Day 1: Boat cave and Paradise Cave
Start at the tourist centre in the township early, take the Son River boat to Phong Nha Cave and spend about an hour on the water inside. Return for a long lunch and a rest in the township. In the afternoon, drive to Paradise Cave, take the cart or walk the paved approach, and walk the boardwalk as far as your legs allow. Return before dusk.

Guides for the stops on these routes
Pacing
Pacing a Phong Nha trip for parents and children
- Keep to the boat cave and Paradise Cave. Both can be done with rests, and neither needs special fitness.
- Paradise Cave is the harder one: a paved approach, then a long staircase down to the boardwalk. Take the cart where available and pace yourself on the stairs.
- Go early. Midday humidity and heat are harder on older travellers than the walking itself.
- Skip the adventure caves unless you are fit and confident in water. Operators grade their tours, so ask for the easiest level and check requirements first.
- Carry your regular medicines and a copy of the prescription. The nearest large hospital care is in Đồng Hới, about an hour away, and travel insurance is essential.
- Wear shoes with a good grip. Cave floors and boat landings are wet and slippery.
