The short answer

Sơn Đoòng Cave: what visitors should know first

Only if you are a fit, committed adventurer with a large budget. Sơn Đoòng is a multi-day camping expedition with limited permits, and it is closed in the wet months. For most families, the easier caves in the park give a good taste of the region.

History and context

The story behind Sơn Đoòng Cave

Local man Hồ Khanh found the entrance on 10 December 1990 while looking for agarwood, and relocated it in 2008. A British Cave Research Association expedition surveyed it in April 2009. The first guided tourist group went in August 2013. Since 2017 only Oxalis Adventure Tours has permission to take visitors in.

Why it matters

Why Sơn Đoòng Cave is worth your time

Sơn Đoòng is the largest known cave passage in the world by volume, with a main passage over 5 km long, 200 m high and 150 m wide. A 2009 survey put its volume at about 38.5 million cubic metres. It has two large dolines where light enters and trees grow inside.

It matters to Phong Nha because it turned a quiet district into a global caving destination. Even if you never go, knowing it is in these hills changes how you see the karst around the township.

Highlights

What not to miss

  1. 01

    The scale

A passage so large that it holds its own weather and a jungle under a collapsed roof.

  2. 02

    The dolines

Collapsed sections let in light so trees and plants grow inside the cave.

  3. 03

    Expedition style

The trip is a trek and camping adventure, not a sightseeing stop.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Sơn Đoòng is not a cave you drop into on a day trip. Visits are guided, small-group expeditions of several days, with a trek through jungle, river crossings and camping inside the cave. The operator provides guides, porters, equipment and food, and you must meet its fitness requirements.

Book many months ahead, because permits are limited and issued January to August. After August, rain raises river levels and the cave is largely inaccessible; it is officially closed from September to December. Confirm the dates and requirements with the operator, not with a reseller.

If an expedition is not for you, you can still enjoy the region. Spend your time on the boat cave, Paradise Cave and the landscape around the township, and read about Sơn Đoòng at a local exhibit or in photographs.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.

  • Book months ahead; permits are limited
  • Check the fitness requirements before you pay
  • Treat prices as indicative and confirm them with the operator
  • Plan other caves for family members who will not join
