The short answer
Phang Nga Bay: what visitors should know first
Yes, if your group can manage boats and a long day. Book a tour with hotel pick-up, ask how boarding works and check the lunch arrangements, because Jain or vegetarian meals need notice.
History and context
The story behind Phang Nga Bay
Ao Phang Nga National Park was established on 29 April 1981 and covers about 400 square kilometres. Khao Phing Kan became internationally known after appearing in The Man with the Golden Gun.
Ko Panyi is a Muslim fishing village built on stilts, and its floating football pitch dates from 1986.

Why it matters
Why Phang Nga Bay is worth your time
Few landscapes in Asia look like this. The limestone towers rise straight from shallow green water, and a morning spent among them is unlike anything on the beaches of the island. The national park, established in 1981, also protects Thailand's largest remaining area of native mangrove forest, which gives the bay an ecological importance beyond the scenery.
It is also a place under real pressure. Almost a million people visited the park in 2019, and travel writers have warned about over-tourism at its best-known stops. Choosing a smaller or off-peak tour, and treating the Bond stop as brief, gives you a better day and is kinder to the place.

Plan your visit
How to experience it
Most tours leave from the island's east-coast piers, such as Ao Po or Boat Lagoon, after a hotel pick-up. Choose your boat with care. Speedboats are quicker and bumpier, big boats are steadier and suit older travellers better, and small kayak-focused trips reach further into the lagoons. Guides do the paddling on sea canoes, slipping through low rock tunnels when the tide allows.
The usual stops are a sea-cave paddle, lunch at the stilt village of Ko Panyi, and a landing at Khao Phing Kan, where the Ko Tapu spire from the 1974 Bond film stands just offshore. That last stop is short and crowded around midday, so don't make it the focus of the day.
Tell the operator about your food needs when you book, not on the boat. Ko Panyi is a Muslim fishing community, and a standard buffet may not suit strict vegetarians. Carry snacks, a hat, sunscreen and any medicines in a dry bag.
Plan with confidence
Small decisions that make the visit easier.
- Ask exactly how boarding and canoe transfers work
- Request vegetarian or Jain food when you book
- Confirm whether the park fee is included
- Choose a larger boat if anyone is prone to seasickness
- Keep the next day free in case of a weather cancellation
