The Memory at On On Hotel, Phuket: Location and hotel guide

A restored Sino-Portuguese hotel on Phang Nga Road, opened in the late 1920s as Phuket's first hotel. It is a characterful base for two nights in the old town, rather than a beach stay.

Why it matters

Why The Memory at On On Hotel is worth your time

Sleeping inside the heritage you have come to see is rare in Phuket, where most hotels are modern resorts along the coast. On On's arches and shutters link you directly to the tin-era town, and its history as the island's first hotel gives it more standing than the many boutique places that have since copied the style.

Its name will also ring a bell for film lovers, because it appeared in The Beach. For a family, though, the real value is more practical: an evening and morning in Phuket Town without any driving, which is exactly when the old streets are most pleasant.

Highlights

What not to miss

  1. 01

    The facade

A two-storey Sino-Portuguese front with arched windows and doors, a landmark on Phang Nga Road.

  2. 02

    Old-town mornings

Being on foot before the streets get busy is the main practical reward of staying here.

  3. 03

    Film connection

The hotel appeared in The Beach, which adds interest for fans.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Treat this as an old-town stay, and pair it with beach nights elsewhere. Arrive in the afternoon, drop your bags and walk: Thalang Road, Soi Romanee and the Thai Hua Museum are all within an easy stroll. Early mornings, when the lanes are empty and the light falls along the shopfronts, are the best reason to sleep here instead of driving in from the coast.

The hotel has 35 rooms, each with its own colour scheme, in a building whose arches and solid walls are part of the appeal. Rooms have been modernised, but heritage buildings have their limits, so ask about noise from the road and about stairs when you book.

For food, you are close to vegan restaurants including Ubuntu Eat on the same road. Our sources do not mention a pool, so plan day trips to the coast by car and confirm the current facilities directly.

Plan with confidence

Before you book the room.

  • Ask about stairs and request a lower floor if needed
  • Confirm parking arrangements or a nearby drop-off
  • Combine the stay with beach nights elsewhere
  • Plan a Sunday around the Lard Yai market
