Plan 01
1 day in Pithoragarh
- 01
Day 1: Fort, caves and the Chandak ridge
Start early at the Gorkha-built Pithoragarh Fort, on a hill at the edge of town, and look over the roofs and the Soar valley while the air is clear. Drive up to Kapileshwar Mahadev cave temple for a short, quiet visit, then take the ridge road to Chandak and Mostamanu for the open views towards the Himalaya. Have lunch back in town and rest. In the late afternoon, walk the main bazaar around Purana Bazaar and Cinema Line for woollens and local crafts.
Stop Time needed Walking Best time Pithoragarh Fort (London Fort) 45 to 90 minutes Moderate Early morning or around sunset for the clearest views Kapileshwar Mahadev Cave Temple 45 to 60 minutes Moderate Morning, before the day's visitors arrive Chandak and Mostamanu 2 to 3 hours with the drive Moderate Clear mornings in October to November and March to May Pace: Moderate walking today — plan a sit-down break between stops.
With parents at Pithoragarh Fort (London Fort): The approach is a short uphill walk or drive and the ground can be uneven. There is little seating or shade, so older visitors may prefer to go only as far as the first viewpoint and sit there.
With parents at Kapileshwar Mahadev Cave Temple: A short climb is involved and the cave itself is low and enclosed. Older travellers may find the final approach and cave entrance tiring, so ask locally how far a vehicle can go.
Plan 02
2 days in Pithoragarh
- 01
Day 1: Town and ridge
Morning at the fort and Kapileshwar Mahadev, then a taxi to Chandak and Mostamanu. Return for a long lunch and an unhurried afternoon in the bazaar.
Stop Time needed Walking Best time Chandak and Mostamanu 2 to 3 hours with the drive Moderate Clear mornings in October to November and March to May Pace: Moderate walking today — plan a sit-down break between stops.
With parents at Chandak and Mostamanu: The road is winding and the walking around the ridge and the temple is uphill and uneven. A vehicle takes the strain out of the climb; seniors can enjoy the view from the roadside viewpoints.
- 02
Day 2: Shiva temples on foot
Drive early to the trailhead for Thal Kedar and walk the final stretch, then visit Nakuleshwar on the way back if energy allows. Dhwaj temple, also about 10 km out with a longer walk, suits people who want a full morning on a trail. Pick one or two, not all three.
Stop Time needed Walking Best time Dhwaj Temple Half a day Demanding Dry, clear months Pace: Dhwaj Temple involves a lot of walking or steps — do it early, and keep the rest of the day light.
With parents at Dhwaj Temple: The walk is long and steep, with no vehicle access to the top and few places to sit. Older travellers should treat it as optional and skip it unless they walk regularly.
Plan 03
3 days in Pithoragarh
- 01
Day 1: Town and ridge
Fort, Kapileshwar Mahadev and Chandak with Mostamanu, with a rest after lunch and a slow bazaar walk in the evening.
- 02
Day 2: Gangolihat and Patal Bhuvaneshwar
Leave early for a long mountain drive of roughly 78 km to Gangolihat. Visit Hat Kalika in its deodar grove, then go on to Patal Bhuvaneshwar cave, about 14 km further. Expect a full day and return after dark only if your driver is comfortable on these roads.
- 03
Day 3: Thal Kedar and Nakuleshwar, or Askot
Choose between the Shiva temple walks near town or a day trip towards Askot Musk Deer Sanctuary, about 54 km away. The sanctuary is for people who like quiet forest drives, not guaranteed wildlife sightings.
Stop Time needed Walking Best time Askot Musk Deer Sanctuary Full day Moderate Dry months outside the monsoon Pace: Moderate walking today — plan a sit-down break between stops.
With parents at Askot Musk Deer Sanctuary: The drive is long and winding, and walking inside is on rough forest ground. It suits older travellers only as a vehicle-based outing, with the road views as the reward.

Pacing
Pacing a Pithoragarh trip for parents and children
- Pithoragarh is hilly. Choose lodging with a lift or on a level street, and ask about the stairs before you book.
- Use a car and driver for temple outings. Thal Kedar and Dhwaj involve several kilometres of uneven walking after the road ends, so ask your driver where the road actually stops.
- Fort, Kapileshwar Mahadev and Chandak are the gentler sights; save the longer temple walks for the days when you feel strongest.
- Mountain roads to Gangolihat and Askot are winding and slow. Take motion-sickness remedies if needed and keep each day to one long drive.
- Winter mornings and evenings are cold, with nights near freezing in December and January, so pack layers and a warm cap.
- Carry regular medicines, a basic first-aid kit and snacks; pharmacies are in town, but not along the day-trip roads.
