The short answer

Shiva-Shakti and Surya Temples: what visitors should know first

Worth seeing if you are doing the full ruins circuit. The Surya temple has lost its image, so it is for architecture and atmosphere. Allow a short, careful visit and expect rough ground.

History and context

The story behind Shiva-Shakti and Surya Temples

Wikipedia describes the Shiva-Shakti temple as a west-facing sandstone temple dated to the 15th century with sculptures of Shiva, Shakti, Surya and Ganesha, with a large ruined Surya temple nearby whose deity image is lost. It also mentions a Surya Mandir among the forest's ruins.

The sources I opened do not name the builders.

Why it matters

Why Shiva-Shakti and Surya Temples is worth your time

Having a sun temple and a Shiva-Shakti temple so close shows the mix of traditions in medieval Polo. Surya worship was well established in western India, and the Modhera Sun Temple is a famous example further south. Here you see a simpler, ruined version in forest.

For visitors it also gives some relief from the Jain and Shiva temples already covered, adding sculpture-led interest. The sense of walking among broken stone and trees, with no crowds, is a large part of why people make the trip.

The ruins sit close enough to combine in one loop.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Start with the Shiva-Shakti temple, which faces west. It is built of sandstone and Wikipedia dates it to the 15th century. Look at the sculpture panels, where Shiva, Shakti, Surya and Ganesha are shown. Because it faces west, afternoon light can suit photographs, but avoid the harshest midday sun.

Then walk to the Surya temple nearby. It is a large ruin and its deity image is lost, so what remains is plan, platform and fallen stone. It is easy to rush this part; instead take a minute to work out where the sanctum stood and how the building related to the Shiva-Shakti temple next door.

Because the Abhapur monuments cluster together, this stop works well at the end of a loop that includes the Sharaneshwar and Jain temples. Carry water, and leave the carvings untouched.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.

  • Visit in the cooler parts of the day
  • Wear sturdy, closed shoes
  • Do not climb on ruined platforms
  • Carry water and sun protection
