Plan 01
1 day in Ponmudi
- 01
Day 1: Tea gardens, river and the hill top
Leave Thiruvananthapuram early, with a short stop at Koyikkal Palace in Nedumangad if you like heritage. Stop at Kallar for tea and a rest by the river, then take the hairpin climb through the tea gardens. Reach the hill top by late morning, walk the viewpoints and the Deer Park area, and have lunch at the resort or a simple eatery. Start down well before dusk, as the forest check post and fog make late departures slow.
Plan 02
2 days in Ponmudi
- 01
Day 1: Drive up and settle in
Take the road up in the morning with stops at Kallar and Golden Valley. Reach Golden Peak or another stay before the check-post cut-off, rest, and walk the nearby viewpoints in the late afternoon. Spend the evening quietly; mist and cool air do most of the work.
- 02
Day 2: Deer Park walk and the forest
Walk the Deer Park area in the morning mist, then visit Seetha Theertham if access suits you. Fitter travellers can arrange the Meenmutty trek with permission; others can rest at Golden Valley. Head down after lunch.
Plan 03
3 days in Ponmudi
- 01
Day 1: Road, river and rest
Drive up slowly with stops at Koyikkal Palace, Kallar and Golden Valley. Check in and keep the afternoon free.
- 02
Day 2: Forest day
Arrange permission in advance for either Meenmutty Falls or a visit to Peppara Wildlife Sanctuary. Choose one, not both, and keep the evening for the viewpoint.
Stop Time needed Walking Best time Meenmutty Falls (Kallar) 3-4 hours including travel from Kallar Demanding Dry months, December to April for trekking Peppara Wildlife Sanctuary Half a day Moderate Dry months, December to April; avoid heavy rain Pace: Meenmutty Falls (Kallar) involves a lot of walking or steps — do it early, and keep the rest of the day light.
With parents at Meenmutty Falls (Kallar): The trail is a forest path with rocks, roots and some railings, and it is steep in parts. It is not suited to people with limited mobility or knee problems. Choose an easier stop such as Golden Valley if in doubt.
With parents at Peppara Wildlife Sanctuary: Walking inside the sanctuary is on forest paths and can be uneven and humid. Seniors can enjoy the dam and its surroundings with less effort, but any trekking should be judged against fitness. Facilities are limited.

Day 3: Slow morning and return
Walk the Deer Park area at first light, take a last look from the hill top and return in daylight.

Pacing
Pacing a Ponmudi trip for parents and children
- Take motion-sickness tablets before the hairpin climb and sit sensitive passengers in front.
- Do the Meenmutty trek only if you are fit; Golden Valley and the Deer Park walk are gentler options.
- Carry a warm layer, a rain jacket and shoes with grip, because mist and wet paths are common.
- Start early and leave before dusk; fog and the forest check post make late descents slow.
- Keep basic medicines and water with you, as shops and clinics on the hill are very limited.
- Check road and weather status before travelling, since heavy rain and landslides can close the route.
