Plan 01

1 day in Puducherry

  1. 01

Day 1: Ashram, promenade and temples

Start early with a visit to Sri Aurobindo Ashram on Rue de la Marine, spending an hour in the peaceful courtyards and gardens. Walk a few minutes to the Promenade Beach for a morning stroll along the seawall, viewing the restored shoreline and the children's park. Stop at the Dupleix Statue and the French War Memorial as you walk. Have lunch in a small café in the French Quarter, then visit Manakula Vinayagar Temple, one of the city's oldest Hindu temples. In the late afternoon, return to the promenade as the light softens, watch for locals at evening walk, and finish with tea at one of the small street-side spots near the Ashram.

Plan 02

2 days in Puducherry

  1. 01

Day 1: Ashram, French Quarter and promenade

Begin at the Sri Aurobindo Ashram, spending a quiet hour in the courtyards and gardens, then walk through the French Quarter's shaded avenues, admiring the shuttered colonial buildings and peaceful streets. Visit Manakula Vinayagar Temple for a morning darshan if you would like to see temple life. Have a long, unhurried lunch in the old city. In the late afternoon, walk the Promenade Beach, viewing the seawall, Dupleix Statue and Children's Park. Watch the evening light and rest in a café before dinner in the French Quarter.

  2. 02

Day 2: Auroville and nearby temples

Drive north to Auroville, the experimental spiritual township, spending time in the Matrimandir meditation chamber (check entry beforehand) and walking the peaceful gardens. Have lunch in one of the simple cafés in the town. In the afternoon, visit one of the nearby village temples such as Thirukaameeswarar in Villianur or Sengazhuneer Amman at Veerampattinam, both about 15–20 minutes from the city. Return to the Promenade for an evening walk before departure.

Plan 03

3 days in Puducherry

  1. 01

Day 1: Sri Aurobindo Ashram and the French Quarter

Arrive early morning and spend the first hours at Sri Aurobindo Ashram, exploring the peaceful courtyards, the Samadhi shrine and the archives. Walk slowly through the French Quarter's tree-lined streets, taking photographs and absorbing the colonial atmosphere. Visit the Pondicherry Lighthouse for a view over the town and coast. Have lunch at a local restaurant, then rest through the afternoon heat. In the late afternoon, walk the Promenade Beach and watch the light change over the bay.

  2. 02

Day 2: Temples and the old city

Visit Manakula Vinayagar Temple at opening time and spend an hour there, observing the rituals if comfortable. Walk to the Pondicherry Museum to see artefacts of colonial and temple history. Spend midday resting indoors—a café, the French Institute of Pondicherry library, or your hotel. In the late afternoon, visit either the Immaculate Conception Cathedral or the Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, both colonial-era churches. End with an evening walk through the Romain Rolland Library gardens or simply along a quiet street in the old city.

  3. 03

Day 3: Auroville and the hinterland

Drive to Auroville early, spend the morning in the Matrimandir gardens and the meditation chamber. Have lunch in one of the simple village cafés. In the afternoon, visit one or two nearby temples, such as Thirukaameeswarar in Villianur (roughly 10 km from the city, towards the inland hinterland) or the older Sengazhuneer Amman temple in Veerampattinam village. Return to Puducherry for an evening promenade walk and a farewell dinner in the old city, perhaps at a small restaurant serving Tamil or French-influenced cuisine.

Pacing

Make the plan work for everyone

  • Heat builds steadily, even in the cool season: Puducherry's coastal humidity means the afternoon feels hotter than the thermometer suggests, from October through March as much as in summer. Plan outdoor sightseeing for the morning or late afternoon, and treat midday as a rest period rather than pushing through it.
  • Walking is the best way to see the French Quarter, not a car: The old town's grid is compact and mostly level, and a car cannot easily stop at every street corner worth seeing. Park once near the Promenade or your hotel and walk the loop; save the car for trips to Auroville or Chunnambar.
  • The beach is a seawall, not sand: Harbour construction eroded Puducherry's town beach decades ago, so the Promenade is a paved walk rather than a place to swim or sit on sand. If a sandy beach matters to your trip, budget a half-day for the boat crossing to Paradise Beach at Chunnambar instead.
  • Dress modestly for the Ashram, temples and churches: Shoulders and knees covered is expected at Sri Aurobindo Ashram, Manakula Vinayagar Temple and the town's churches. Carry a light shawl or scarf if you are dressed for the beach elsewhere in your day.
  • Photography is restricted at some spiritual sites: Cameras and phones are not allowed inside the main hall or at the Samadhi at Sri Aurobindo Ashram, and photography near temple inner sanctums is generally discouraged. Ask before photographing people at worship anywhere in the old town.
  • Carry cash alongside cards: Larger hotels, restaurants and shops in the French Quarter take cards, but smaller cafés, temple donation boxes and the Chunnambar ferry counter are often cash-only. Keep small notes for these.
