The short answer

Oussudu Bird Sanctuary: what visitors should know first

Yes, if you like birds or a calm hour on the water. It is close to the city, so a morning visit fits easily. Go early between November and February, confirm that the boat club is operating, and keep noise down so the birds stay in view.

History and context

The story behind Oussudu Bird Sanctuary

The Puducherry government declared the lake a bird sanctuary in 2008, making it the first and only wildlife sanctuary in the union territory. The area under protection is reported at about 390 acres around the lake.

The lake is also known as Ousteri, and in French as Reserve Ornithologique d'Oussudu. The lake extends into Tamil Nadu, and sources give differing figures for its total extent.

Why it matters

Why Oussudu Bird Sanctuary is worth your time

Oussudu is the only wildlife sanctuary in Puducherry, and one of the few places where a short drive from the town takes you into serious birding. About 40 migratory species are reported to arrive each year after November, and the lake has also been recognised as an Important Bird Area.

It also stands for a wider issue: the lake has faced poaching, including a 2022 case in which dozens of poisoned bird carcasses were seized. Visiting respectfully, and following the guidance of the wildlife staff, supports the case for protecting it.

Highlights

What not to miss

  1. 01

    Winter migrants

About 40 migratory species are reported to arrive after November, including painted stork and openbill stork.

  2. 02

    Boating on the lake

A quiet boat ride offers a closer view of waterbirds than the shore does.

  3. 03

    Close to the city

It is a short drive from the French Quarter, so a bird walk fits into a half day.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Drive out in the early morning, when the light is soft and birds are most active. The lake is on the northwestern edge of Puducherry, so a car or auto with a driver is the easiest option. Binoculars make a large difference, since many birds feed at a distance.

If the boat club is running, a slow boat ride gives a different angle on the lake, with chances to see egrets, storks, cormorants and ibises. Quiet, unhurried boating is better for the wildlife than fast rides, so ask the boatman to keep the engine low and avoid shouting. Away from the water, look along the reedy edges for weaver bird nests and for lotus plants in season.

Plan to leave before the heat builds. Combine the visit with a stop in Auroville or a late breakfast in town. Check your plans against the season, as water levels and bird numbers shift through the year.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.

  • Go at sunrise for the best birdlife
  • Take binoculars, water and a hat
  • Check boating timings and fares on the day
  • Keep voices low and avoid feeding the birds
