The short answer

Best areas to stay in Pune

  1. 01

Old city edge (near Shaniwar Wada and Camp)

Best for: Travellers who want to walk to Shaniwar Wada, Rani Baugh and the bazaars

Atmospheric, central, with heritage hotels and haveli stays. Trade-offs are traffic noise, narrow lanes where cars cannot always reach the door, and crowds, especially in markets. Good for independent travellers; check lift and vehicle access carefully if travelling with elders.

  2. 02

    Koregaon Park

Best for: Calm, green streets with good restaurants and cultural sites; close to Osho Ashram

A planned residential area with tree-lined lanes, cafés, galleries and shops. About 15–20 minutes by car to Shaniwar Wada. Peaceful for older travellers and families wanting a quieter base with easy access to restaurants and the ashram.

  3. 03

    Viman Nagar

Best for: Modern comfort, shopping and restaurants, close to the airport

A newer, leafy commercial and residential area with many mid-range and upscale hotels, malls and restaurants. About 15–25 minutes to the old city. Convenient for airport connections and families wanting modern amenities with less noise than central Pune.

  4. 04

    Aundh and Senapati Bapat Road

Best for: Heritage hotels, quiet residential feel, close to cultural institutions

Home to many heritage hotels in converted havelis and colonial buildings. Quieter than the old city, with good gardens and calm mornings. About 20–30 minutes to Shaniwar Wada by car. A good choice for those seeking heritage ambience without old-city crowding.

Before you book

What to check when booking for older travellers

  • Ask for a lift, or a ground-floor room — many heritage hotels have steps and no lift.
  • Check how far the hotel is from the sights you care about, in minutes by road, not kilometres.
  • Prefer free cancellation until close to the date, in case plans or health change.
  • Look for 24-hour reception, in-house dining and a doctor-on-call policy.
  • Read recent reviews for noise — old-city streets and wedding venues can be loud late.

For parents and senior travellers

Comfort notes for Pune

  • Shaniwar Wada courtyard is mostly level, but the interior rooms have a few steps. Rani Baugh and Aga Khan Palace are entirely level and gentle.
  • Parvati Hill is a steep climb in about 20 minutes. The eastern steps near Pataleshwar Cave are slightly gentler. If stairs are a concern, visit Pataleshwar Cave Temple at the base instead—it is remarkable and requires no climbing.
  • Pune summers are hot (March–May) and the monsoon (June–September) brings humidity. October–February is most comfortable for outdoor walking.
  • Choose a hotel with lifts and easy car access. Koregaon Park and Viman Nagar are easier than the narrow lanes of the old city; Aundh has quieter, tree-lined streets.
