Plan 01

1 day in Raichur

  1. 01

Day 1: The fort and its mosques

Start early at Raichur Fort, before the heat, and walk the lower walls and gateways. Visit the Jami Masjid and the Sailani gate area, and climb to the citadel only if the steps suit you. Go to the Ek Minar Masjid at the foot of the hillock, then rest through midday. In the late afternoon, return for the light on the walls or drive to the Krishna side of the district if time allows.

Pace: Raichur Fort involves a lot of walking or steps — do it early, and keep the rest of the day light.

With parents at Raichur Fort: The fort has uneven stone, steps and little shade, and the climb to the citadel is steep. Older visitors can enjoy the lower walls, gates and mosques without climbing, but should avoid the heat and carry water.

    Day 1: Raichur Fort

Spend the morning at the fort, covering the gates, inscriptions, Jami Masjid and Ek Minar Masjid. Rest at midday. Use the late afternoon for a slow walk through the old town.

  2. 02

    Day 2: Mantralayam or Mudgal

Drive about 45 km to Mantralayam for darshan at the Raghavendra Swamy Matha, leaving early to avoid queues. Alternatively go to Mudgal, a long drive into Lingsugur taluk, to see the moated fort. Return by afternoon.

Plan 03

  3. 03

    Day 3: Maski and Mudgal

Head west into Lingsugur taluk, visiting Mudgal Fort and then Maski, with the Ashokan rock edict, in one long day. Carry water and food.

Mudgal FortHalf a day with travelModerateEarly morning; October to February

Pace: Moderate walking today — plan a sit-down break between stops.

With parents at Mudgal Fort: The fort has uneven ground, steps and little shade or seating, and the village is far from medical care. It suits fit travellers on a cool day; others can see the lower walls and gateways only.

Guides for the stops on these routes

Pacing

Pacing a Raichur trip for parents and children

  • Visit the fort in the first two hours after sunrise; there is little shade and stone surfaces heat quickly.
  • Skip the steep climb to the citadel if knees or balance are a concern; the lower walls, gates and mosques cover most of the interest.
  • Hire a car with driver for Mudgal, Maski and Mantralayam; public transport is slow and the villages are widely spread.
  • Carry drinking water, sun protection and regular medicines on every outing.
  • Dress modestly for mosques and temples, and carry socks for hot stone floors.
  • Between March and June, plan on indoor rest from late morning to late afternoon.
