How to experience it

Leave Raichur early and cross the Tungabhadra into Andhra Pradesh, arriving in time for morning darshan before crowds build. The central shrine is the brindavana of Raghavendra Swamy, who entered the brindavana at Mantralayam in 1671. Queue patiently and follow the volunteers' guidance.

After darshan, walk to the river ghat and spend some quiet time by the Tungabhadra. If you stay for the evening, the chariot procession of the deity takes place at about 8 pm daily, according to a listing. The Matha provides meals, rooms and cottages, and hotels and lodges are available in town.

Weekends and festivals are very crowded, so a weekday is better. Combine with Raichur's fort on a two-day trip.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.

  • Go early on a weekday
  • Wear traditional dress
  • Confirm darshan timings on arrival
  • Carry water for queues
