Why it matters
Why Kabra Pahar Rock Paintings is worth your time
Raigarh district has one of the richer concentrations of painted rock shelters in Chhattisgarh. C.W. Anderson began recording such shelters in the early twentieth century, starting at Singhanpur, and later researchers continued to document the region. Kabra Pahar is among the better-known examples and sits right next to the city.
The images are a rare, direct record of how people who lived in these hills saw their world, with animals, hunting and dance. Seeing them in place is a reminder that the region's cultural story long predates the princely courts and the steel plants.

How to experience it
Kabra Pahar, also called Kabra Pahad, means Spotted Mountain, and the name makes sense once you see the rock face. The paintings sit at the foot of a tall, wall-like cliff, so some figures are high above the ground. The drive from Raigarh is short, but the last part is on foot through undergrowth and over stones, with no signposts. A local guide from the village saves time and avoids a wrong turn.
The colours are mostly deep red or ochre. The motifs recorded here include bison, a tortoise, deer, a lizard, a wheel-like chakra and geometric human figures, with scenes of hunting and dancing and handprints noted in the wider group of Raigarh sites. Graffiti has covered many images, and the paintings are less well preserved than those at nearby Ongna.
Treat it as a short outing rather than a day in itself. Look with your eyes rather than your hands, since touching or rubbing paint speeds its loss, and take only photographs. Carry water, wear a hat, and avoid wet weather, when the ground is slippery.
Plan with confidence
Small decisions that make the visit easier.
