Plan 01

1 day in Rajauli

  1. 01

Day 1: Forest morning, gurdwara, falls

Start at first light at the forest office for the sanctuary edge, where chital and sambar are most likely to be seen in the cool hours. Return to town for a visit to Gurdwara Rajauli Sangat and a langar meal. In the afternoon, drive to Kakolat Falls if the season is right, allowing plenty of time for the road, and be back on the highway before dusk.

Gurdwara Rajauli Sangat45-60 minutesEasyMorning or early evening; around Guru Nanak Gurpurab for the main gathering
Kakolat Falls2-3 hours at the site, plus road timeModerateSeptember to December for flow; avoid peak summer weekends

Pace: Moderate walking today — plan a sit-down break between stops.

With parents at Kakolat Falls: The viewpoint and pool area have railings and some benches, but the approach involves stairs and slippery rock. Keep older travellers at the viewpoint, avoid the pool in wet months and carry plenty of water.

Plan 02

2 days in Rajauli

  1. 01

    Day 1: Town and forest

Spend the morning at the sanctuary edge with a local guide if the forest office allows, then rest through midday. In the late afternoon, visit Gurdwara Rajauli Sangat and sit for a while in the hall before dinner.

    Day 2: Kakolat Falls

Leave early for Kakolat Falls in the Ektara hills. Walk down to the viewpoint, stay out of the water if the rock is wet and picnic in the shade. Return in the afternoon and continue to Gaya or Ranchi.

With parents at Rajauli Wildlife Sanctuary: There are no seating areas, toilets or shade built for visitors, and tracks are uneven. Drive to Kakolat Falls for a half-day, then continue towards Nawada, Gaya or Bodh Gaya.

Pacing

Pacing a Rajauli trip for parents and children

  • Stay in Gaya or Nawada if you need reliable bathrooms, lifts and nearby hospitals, and visit Rajauli by car.
  • Keep forest visits short and vehicle-based; there are no benches, toilets or shade built for visitors.
  • At Kakolat Falls, stay at the viewpoint and avoid wet rock and the pool in the monsoon.
  • Carry water, any regular medicines and snacks; supplies are thin outside town.
  • Hire a car and driver for the day instead of relying on shared transport, and be back on the highway before dark.
  • Dress modestly and carry a headscarf for the gurdwara.
