Why it matters

Why Adi Jagannatha Perumal Temple, Thiruppullani is worth your time

Thiruppullani is one of the 108 Divya Desams, the Vishnu temples praised in the Alvars' Naalayira Divya Prabandham. Thirumangai Alvar composed verses about this shrine, which ties it into the wider Vaishnava pilgrimage across Tamil Nadu.

The temple is also part of the Rama story that runs through this coast. Its legend places Rama here on a bed of sacred grass before the crossing to Lanka, and it sits near Rameswaram and Devipattinam on the same route. For travellers tracing the Ramayana along the Ramanathapuram coast, it is a natural stop between the two.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Approach the temple from the east, where a five-tiered gateway tower marks the entrance. Inside are shrines to Adi Jagannatha (Vishnu), his consort Padmasini, and two to Rama: Dharbasayana Ramar, shown reclining, and Pattabhi Ramar. The temple tank is Chakra Theertham.

The name Dharbasayanam refers to the grass (darbha) on which Rama is said to have rested while seeking the ocean god's help to cross to Lanka. Walk slowly through the corridors and watch the worship, which is performed six times a day.

Visit in the morning. Festivals, including the Panguni Brahmotsavam and Rama Navami, bring crowds, so avoid those days for a quiet visit. Childless couples sometimes come to install a snake image and make offerings, a practice you may notice. Pair the temple with the Ramalinga Vilasam palace in Ramanathapuram town, and allow an hour in total.

Plan with confidence

Visit as a guest, not a spectator.

  • Dress modestly and take off footwear
  • Avoid the Panguni and Rama Navami festival days if you want quiet
  • Combine with the palace in Ramanathapuram
  • Carry water and visit in the morning
