Plan 01

1 day in Ranikhet

  1. 01

Day 1: Orchards, temples and the museum

Leave in the morning for Jhula Devi Temple and Chaubatia Gardens, where an orchard walk takes about two hours. If energy allows, continue to Bhalu Dam. Return to town for lunch, then spend an hour at the Kumaon Regimental Centre Museum, carrying photo ID and checking opening days first. End with a short walk on Mall Road and bal mithai from a sweet shop.

    StopTime neededWalkingBest time
Jhula Devi Temple15-30 minutesEasyMorning; the hills are clearest from October to June
Chaubatia Gardens2-3 hours, longer with Bhalu DamModerateApril-May for blossom; late summer for fruit; October for clear views
Bhalu Dam1-2 hours including the walkModerateMorning or early afternoon; March to June and October to November
Kumaon Regimental Centre MuseumAbout 1 hourEasyMorning or mid-afternoon; October to June for comfortable walking to and from the site

Pace: Moderate walking today — plan a sit-down break between stops.

With parents at Chaubatia Gardens: The paths are partly rocky and include a stretch that descends and climbs again, roughly 100 m each way on the longer tour. Older visitors can stay on the flat upper area and the road. Seating is limited, so bring a folding stool if you need one.

With parents at Bhalu Dam: The walk from Chaubatia is about 3 km and partly uneven. A vehicle can reach close to the lake in some conditions, which suits older visitors. Seating is limited and there is little shelter in rain.

Guides for the stops on these routes

Pacing

Pacing a Ranikhet trip for parents and children

  • Ranikhet is hilly but low-effort: most sights need only short walks. Choose a taxi for Upat, Chaubatia and Majkhali instead of walking between them.
  • Book a room with easy vehicle access and, if possible, on the ground floor. Many older hotels have steps and no lift.
  • Evenings are cold even in summer. Carry a warm layer and avoid late outings on hill roads.
  • At Chaubatia, stay on the flat upper paths and skip the descending trails if knees are a concern.
  • Carry photo ID for the museum and military areas, and expect polite security checks.
  • If you arrive from Kathgodam, take breaks on the drive; the road climbs for a few hours with many bends.
