The short answer

Saqr Park: what visitors should know first

Go if you have children or want a green, shaded sit-down. It is a local-style park, not a big sight, so allow a couple of hours in the cooler late afternoon. Check what extras cost, since boats and rides are charged separately.

History and context

The story behind Saqr Park

The official page says the park was inaugurated in 1991 by Sheikh Saqr bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Ruler of the emirate from 1948 to 2010. Saqr means falcon in Arabic.

Why it matters

Why Saqr Park is worth your time

Saqr Park, inaugurated in 1991 by Sheikh Saqr bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, is where local families spend weekends. That gives a more everyday view of Ras Al Khaimah than resorts or forts do.

It also fills a practical gap on a long family trip: a green place to sit, let children run, and rest after sightseeing. It suits mixed-age groups better than most attractions here. It is also one of the few places in the emirate where a family can spend an afternoon for a very small outlay.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Arrive in the late afternoon, pay the entry and head first to the lake, where you can walk the shaded shoreline or rent a pedal boat. The waterfall and benches make a comfortable resting point for older travellers.

Children will head for the play area and arcade, which the official page says include a merry-go-round, carousel, bumper cars and a Ferris wheel. Rides cost extra and are not part of the entry fee. Picnic and barbecue areas under the trees suit larger groups.

Teenagers might prefer the 620 square metre skatepark within the Ghaff tree reserve. Pack snacks, since choices inside may be limited, and keep the visit short in warm months.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.

  • Bring cash for entry, parking and rides
  • Visit late afternoon
  • Carry water and snacks
  • Check opening hours at the gate
  • Wear sun protection
