The short answer

Suwaidi Pearl Farm: what visitors should know first

Book ahead for a gentle, 2.5-hour boat outing that suits families and older travellers who can step on and off a boat. It is a good winter morning activity with a gift shop at the end. Confirm what the package includes, especially lunch.

History and context

The story behind Suwaidi Pearl Farm

The official tourism site says the farm was established in 2005 by Emirati Abdulla Al Suwaidi, who set it up to honour his grandfather and the emirate's pearl-fishing heritage.

Why it matters

Why Suwaidi Pearl Farm is worth your time

Pearls were the economic backbone of this coast until the market collapsed in the late 1920s, and villages such as Al Jazirah Al Hamra grew around them. Most visitors never see this heritage in action. The farm, set up by Abdulla Al Suwaidi in 2005, offers a living version: a working farm in a mangrove lagoon below the mountains.

It works well for mixed-age groups because it is low effort, educational and different from the usual beach or fort stop. The mangrove and mountain setting is also among the quieter parts of the emirate.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Contact the farm in advance, choose a tour time and ask whether lunch is included in your package. Tours start from the Al Rams corniche and take a traditional pearling boat through mangroves and coastal wetlands, with a guide explaining the bay's ecology and how pearls were gathered before modern farming.

You then reach the floating farmhouse, where the farm explains how oysters are seeded and cared for. The farm says it runs on solar power and describes its practices as sustainable. The best-known part is opening an oyster yourself; the official page says there is around a 60 per cent chance of finding at least one pearl, so treat it as a bonus, not a promise.

Wear loose, modest clothing covering shoulders and knees, closed laced shoes, a hat and sunscreen. The gift shop sells pearl products at the end. Divers can arrange pearl diving or scuba in advance. Pair the visit with Dhayah Fort, which is nearby.
