Why it matters
Why RIWATCH Ethnographic Museum is worth your time
RIWATCH shows the region's peoples through their own objects, which is rare in a state where museums are usually government-run. That makes it a useful counterweight to forest and fort visits, because it puts names, tools and craft behind the landscape you drive through. Visiting also supports a local, community-run institution rather than a large attraction.
It also helps visitors understand the communities of the valley, from Idu Mishmi to Adi, before going into the hills.

How to experience it
Come in the late morning and take the galleries in order. The museum is organised into an Arunachal Pradesh gallery, a Northeast India gallery and an International Understanding gallery that is still developing. Objects were contributed by local people, which is why it is often called the People's Museum.
Look for everyday and ceremonial items, such as baskets and war coats, and read the labels for community names. Labels name the Idu Mishmi and other peoples of the region.
This is a good rainy-day alternative to outdoor trips. Ask at the front desk about guided visits.
