The short answer
Neelimala Trail, Appachimedu and Saramkuthi: what visitors should know first
This is the pilgrimage's physical heart. It is a steady climb of roughly five kilometres with a steep Neelimala section. Go slowly, rest often and use the gentler Swami Ayyappan Road if you prefer; dolis are available through Devaswom counters.

Why it matters
Why Neelimala Trail, Appachimedu and Saramkuthi is worth your time
The trek is not just a way up. Each stop has a story and a ritual: Sabari Peedam honours the saint Sabari and Saramkuthi is where first-time pilgrims leave their arrows. Walking it puts the whole tradition in sequence.
It also sits inside the Periyar Tiger Reserve. The forest setting is part of the experience and part of the responsibility: litter and noise matter here, and the rules on prohibited items and conduct apply along the whole trail.

Plan your visit
How to experience it
From Pamba the path climbs through Neelimala, the steepest stretch, then continues past Appachimedu and the Sabari Peedam to Saramkuthi. Pilgrims call out chants as they climb; stop for water and rest, and do not hurry.
Appachimedu is one of the landmarks on the way up. Sabari Peedam is where pilgrims pay respects to the saint Sabari. At Saramkuthi, first-time pilgrims (kanni Ayyappans) leave the wooden arrows they picked up at Erumely. From there the Sannidhanam is a short walk onward.
An alternative to Neelimala is the Swami Ayyappan Road, which joins the main trail near Saramkuthi and suits those who find the granite steps tough. Check which path the day's queue management sends you on.
