Sagar is a university and garrison city in the north of Madhya Pradesh, built around Lakha Banjara Lake. A small fort is said to have been raised on the shore around 1660, and Maratha governors later fortified the town and completed a larger fort in 1780. That lake and fort still define the middle of the city, and the district around it has more history than its low profile suggests.

Most visitors come for the forts of the surrounding district rather than the city itself. Rahatgarh has a hilltop fort and a waterfall on the Bina river, Garhakota a ruined fort between two rivers, and Dhamoni a Garha-Mandla fort with a dargah beside it. Further out, Eran holds some of the earliest Gupta-period temples and a colossal boar sculpture, while the Veerangana Durgavati Tiger Reserve, formed around the old Nauradehi sanctuary, brings forest and wolves within reach.

Sagar suits travellers who like to drive, read about what they are seeing and accept modest facilities. It is not a polished tourist city, and many sites have no ticketing, signage or cafés. With a car and driver, an early start and a rest in the afternoon, two or three days work well, and the city itself gives you a lake walk and local sweets in the evening.

Food to try in Sagar

Food and restaurants · 1 guide

Sagar's food is regional and simple. Chironji ki barfi, a sweet made with seeds gathered from local forests, and surkhi ki mangodi, a fried moong dal snack, are the best-known local items. Samosa and gujiya are also common at sweet shops. For everyday meals, hotels and small restaurants on the main roads serve vegetarian North Indian food.

For older travellers, stick to freshly cooked, hot food and bottled or filtered water. Roadside stops on day trips are basic; carry water and snacks.

Shopping in Sagar

Shopping

Shopping in Sagar is practical rather than touristy: the main market streets sell sweets, namkeen, textiles and household goods. The best souvenir is a box of chironji barfi from an established sweet shop. Prices at most shops are fixed or lightly negotiable; ask before buying by weight.

Choose without overthinking

Which Sagar experience is right for your trip?

Most plans get crowded because nobody is willing to choose. These comparisons make the trade-offs clear.

Rahatgarh or Garhakota for a day out?

Choose Rahatgarh for a hill fort plus a waterfall, best in and after the rains. Choose Garhakota for river views, 1857 history and several old temples, with less physical effort.

Eran or the tiger reserve?

Eran is for early temples and sculpture, and it is a reliable visit. The tiger reserve is for wildlife, but access and sightings are uncertain, so confirm arrangements first.

Dhamoni or Garhpehra?

Garhpehra is close, easy and has a preserved Sheesh Mahal. Dhamoni is farther and more rustic, rewarding if you like Garha-Mandla ruins.

Sagar city or the district sights first?

Start with the lake and fort for orientation, then spend full days on the district sights.

July and August are the wettest months, with over 350 mm each. Waterfalls peak but tracks to ruins get muddy.

  5. 05

    Access

Sagar Fort is partly used by an institution, and tiger reserve entry rules change. Confirm before travelling.

  6. 06

    Dress

Dress modestly for temples and the dargah at Dhamoni, and cover your head at the shrine.

  7. 07

    Money

Carry cash for small shops and entry fees; card acceptance is patchy outside the city.

  8. 08

    Photography

Avoid photographing institutional areas of the fort and follow any staff instructions.

Sagar with elderly parents: what to know

  • Hire a car with a driver; the sights outside the city are rough and public transport is thin.
  • Plan one outing a day, starting early, with a rest after lunch.
