Sakleshpur sits at about 930 metres at the top of the Western Ghats, in Hassan district, on the banks of the Hemavati river. It is a plantation town first: coffee, black pepper, cardamom, cinnamon and areca nut grow in the shade of tall forest trees, and much of the visitor economy is estates that offer walks, meals and rooms.
The sights are modest and spread out. Manjarabad Fort, a star-shaped fort dated to 1792 and attributed to Tipu Sultan, is the town's one proper monument. The Sakleshwara temple on the river is the main place of worship. The real appeal is the landscape: forest viewpoints such as Bisle, the grassy ridge of Jenukal Gudda, which is the highest peak in the district, and the ghat railway that drops towards the coast through dozens of tunnels.
It rains heavily here. The monsoon is spectacular and wet, with some of the heaviest rainfall in the district, so most visitors come between November and February, when the air is clear and the days are mild. March and April are warmer but dry; May brings the first showers.
For families and older travellers, Sakleshpur works best as a base rather than a checklist. Stay on an estate or in a homestay, take one outing a day, and keep the hill treks for those who are fit. Hoysala temples at Belur and Halebidu and the coffee town of Chikmagalur are within day-trip distance, and both have their own Raahzo guides.
