Autos and local taxis serve the city, but for Hirakud, Huma, Chiplima and the sanctuaries a hired car and driver is the practical choice. Agree the route and waiting time beforehand.

Easy transfers to and in Sambalpur

  • Travel between November and February; summer afternoons are punishing and monsoon road trips are slow.
  • Hire a car and driver for the outlying sights; public transport to Huma, Chiplima and the sanctuaries is limited.
  • Hirakud's minars involve stairs; the dyke drive and lower viewpoints are easier.
  • Sanctuaries have minimal facilities: carry water, medicines and food, and return before dark.
  • Keep buffer time in your plan; roads and distances take longer than they look on the map.
  • Ask the airline or railway for wheelchair or porter assistance when you book, not on the day.
  • Pre-book the pickup from the airport or station, so nobody has to negotiate with drivers after a long journey.
  • Choose arrivals in daylight where you can, and keep the first afternoon free to rest.
