Go only if you want Western Ghats forest and are prepared for a long drive and uncertain facilities. Confirm entry, trekking and boating arrangements with the forest department first, check monsoon closures, and do not expect to see tigers.
History and context
The story behind Chandoli National Park
Chandoli was declared a wildlife sanctuary in 1985 and upgraded to a national park in May 2004. Its water comes from the Warna river and reservoir.

Why it matters
Why Chandoli National Park is worth your time
Chandoli became a sanctuary in 1985 and a national park in May 2004. It is the southern part of the Sahyadri Tiger Reserve, which was declared a Project Tiger reserve in 2007 and also includes Koyna Wildlife Sanctuary to the north. Protecting this forest connects Western Ghats wildlife corridors between Koyna and the Radhanagari-Dajipur area.
The park gives Sangli district something its farms and sugar towns do not: a stretch of high-rainfall forest. The tiger camera-trap record of 2018 was the first direct evidence in eight years, which says as much about how rare large predators are here as about the effort of protecting them.

Plan your visit
How to experience it
Plan this as a proper expedition rather than a drop-in. Start early from Sangli or Kolhapur and call the forest office in Shirala or the Sahyadri Tiger Reserve office in advance for current entry arrangements, because they are not published online. Ask specifically about permits, guides, vehicle access and whether any lodging is available.
The habitat is moist deciduous forest, lateritic plateau and grassland above the Warna reservoir. Residents include leopard, gaur (Indian bison), sloth bear, sambar, barking deer, giant squirrel and more than 120 bird species. A tiger was camera-trapped in 2018, but visitors should treat tiger sightings as extremely unlikely. Walk only with a forest guide and stay on marked trails.
If boating or a jeep safari is available, book it through the forest department rather than informal operators. Carry your own food and water, as facilities inside the park are limited, and plan to be out before dark.
Plan with confidence
Small decisions that make the visit easier.
- Call the forest office for entry rules before you drive

- Tickets and access
- Entry rules, fees, safari and boating bookings are not published in detail. District tourism lists trekking, birdwatching, boating and jeep safaris as activities; confirm what is actually available with the forest office. The park is reported to close to visitors during the monsoon.
