The short answer
Poush Mela: what visitors should know first
Go only if you accept big crowds in return for the atmosphere. It falls around late December, accommodation is scarce, and the pace is slow. Book early and plan quiet time away from the fairground.
History and context
The story behind Poush Mela
Poush Mela is held in Santiniketan from the 7th day of Poush, around 23 December. A small fair was organised in 1894 in connection with the establishment of the Brahma temple. The fair has run annually since, except during the 1943 Bengal Famine, 1946 Direct Action Day and the COVID-19 pandemic.
From 2017 it was extended to six days.

Why it matters
Why Poush Mela is worth your time
Poush Mela is the closest Santiniketan comes to a public festival of its own. It began as a small fair in 1894, linked to the founding of the Brahma temple, and grew into a winter gathering for crafts, folk music and food. It has continued annually, apart from a few interruptions such as the 1943 Bengal famine and the COVID-19 pandemic.
It matters because it shows the town's cultural life in public, with Baul singers, artisans and visiting families sharing the same ground. For visitors, it offers a concentrated look at Bengal's folk traditions, but needs patience and planning.

Plan your visit
How to experience it
Plan around the dates first, because the fair follows the Bengali calendar and starts around the 7th day of Poush, roughly 23 December. The fair officially lasts three days, although vendors may stay longer, and in recent years it has been extended. Book accommodation and travel weeks ahead.
On the ground, expect stalls selling local printed fabrics, handicrafts, toys and food, and Baul, kirtan and kobigan performances. Opening-day mornings begin with shehnai music. Go early in the day for the best atmosphere and fewer crowds, and take breaks in quieter areas of the campus.
Keep cash in small notes, watch your belongings and allow extra time for movement. If crowds are a problem, consider visiting Santiniketan a few days earlier or later and see the Shonajhuri Haat instead.
Plan with confidence
