Why it matters

Why Love Waterfall and Hoang Lien National Park is worth your time

Hoang Lien National Park protects a large area of the Hoang Lien Son range, with terrain between about 1,000 and 3,000 m. It has recorded more than 3,000 plant species and a range of rare animals, so a walk here shows a side of Sa Pa that most terrace-focused trips miss.

For travellers, the national park offers a calmer counterpoint to busy villages. The waterfall walk is short enough for most reasonably fit visitors, and the cooler, wetter forest is a pleasant break in hot months. It is also a reminder that the Hoang Lien Son is a conservation area, not only a scenic backdrop, so stay on paths and take litter out with you.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Reach the park entrance by taxi, motorbike or on a half-day tour. From the entrance, follow the signed path for about 30 minutes on foot to Love Waterfall, passing forest and small streams. The route is moderate in effort, with steps and some roots, and it is cooler under the trees than in town.

Bring a rain jacket and shoes with grip. Mornings after clear nights are best, as cloud later in the day can hide views and make the path slippery. If you have limited stamina, treat the walk as an out-and-back where you decide your own turning point.

The national park itself is a large protected area in the Hoang Lien Son range, covering the Sa Pa area and parts of neighbouring Lai Chau province. A short walk here is a taste of that, though serious birdwatching or trekking needs a licensed guide and more time. Pair it with Silver Waterfall for a day built around water.

Plan with confidence
