The short answer
Tikarpada: what visitors should know first
Yes, if you go to Satkosia at all, Tikarpada is the place to start. Drive in through the Pampasar gate with your permission sorted, spend a morning at the viewpoint, interpretation centre and river, and leave before the evening gate time.
History and context
The story behind Tikarpada
Tikarpada has long been the main eco-tourism centre of the reserve. A gharial research and conservation unit was opened here in 1975, ahead of the gorge sanctuary's 1976 notification, and it was later joined by the interpretation centre and nature camp. In 2007 the area became part of Satkosia Tiger Reserve.
A 2026 report lists Tikarpada among six eco-tourism hubs planned in the reserve, which points to continuing investment in visitor facilities.

Why it matters
Why Tikarpada is worth your time
Tikarpada matters because it is the part of Satkosia that is set up for visitors. The reserve is large and mostly unreachable by ordinary vehicles, so having one place with a viewpoint, an interpretation centre, a gharial unit and a camp gives you a base from which the rest makes sense. It is also where the river is most easily seen as a gorge, with hills framing the water.
It is also a good indicator of how the reserve is run. The state has put forward a plan for six new eco-tourism hubs in the reserve, with Tikarpada among them, which suggests that visitor facilities here will keep changing. Check current conditions before you go, and treat any older description of rooms or boats with caution.

Plan your visit
How to experience it
Reach the Pampasar gate early, with your permission or booking ready, and then drive on to Tikarpada, which takes about half an hour more. Start at the river viewpoint while the light is gentle. The Mahanadi widens here, with forested hills on both sides and sandbars where crocodilians bask. Take your time; the point is to sit and watch.
Next, visit the interpretation centre and the gharial research unit, both close by, to understand what the reserve protects and why the river matters. If a boat trip is available, take it for the best view of the gorge and its banks, and keep your hands inside the boat. Short nature trails near the camp are fine for a light walk, but keep to marked paths and take the guide the camp suggests.
Plan the exit as carefully as the arrival. The forest gate closes at a set time and the drive out takes a while, so leave Tikarpada while there is still good daylight. If you stay at the camp, treat the evening as a quiet one; there is not much to do except watch the river darken and listen.
Plan with confidence
Small decisions that make the visit easier.
- Arrange permission at the Pampasar gate before you drive in
- Leave Tikarpada well before the evening gate closing time
- Carry water, repellent and any medicines
- Confirm with the forest department whether a camp bed is available
- Use a guide for any trail walking
