Why it matters
Why Meherabad is worth your time
Meher Baba is a 20th-century spiritual teacher whose followers include devotees across continents, and Meherabad is the centre of that community. It adds a non-temple dimension to a region otherwise dominated by Hindu pilgrimage.
For older travellers who find the queue at Shani Shingnapur stressful, it offers a very different pace: shaded grounds, silence instead of chanting, and no pressure to move on. It is also one of the few places in the region where a visit can be unstructured, with time simply to sit, look and rest between the other stops of a pilgrimage trip.

Plan your visit
How to experience it
Plan Meherabad as a quiet half day. Meher Baba established the ashram in 1923 and was entombed at the Samadhi Mandir at Upper Meherabad in 1969. Pilgrims arrive from India and abroad, and the atmosphere is silent and contemplative rather than ritual-heavy.
Walk from the lower area to the Samadhi, spend a few minutes inside and sit outdoors afterwards. The dhuni, a sacred fire, is worshipped on the twelfth of each month at the lower site.
Meherazad, nearby, has gardens and a hill that are reportedly open only on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays for a short window around late morning, so check before assuming you can visit.
