The short answer

Al Noor Mosque: what visitors should know first

Yes, especially if you have never been inside a mosque. Go on a guided visit, dress modestly, and plan around prayer times. It is also lovely lit up after sunset from the corniche. Confirm tour times with the official site first.

History and context

The story behind Al Noor Mosque

Groundbreaking took place on 6 April 2003 and construction was completed in 2005. The design draws on the Ottoman tradition, influenced by Istanbul's Sultan Ahmed Mosque.

Why it matters

Why Al Noor Mosque is worth your time

Sharjah has more than 600 mosques, and Al Noor is one of those open to the public. For visitors who feel unsure about visiting a mosque, a guided tour here is a gentle, structured introduction, with a guide who expects to field questions.

The design is also a direct tie to Istanbul: it was influenced by the Sultan Ahmed Mosque, the Blue Mosque. Seeing an Ottoman-style building on the Gulf is a reminder of how far architectural ideas travel along trade routes, which fits the broader story of Sharjah as a port.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Arrive before your tour, remove your shoes and cover up. Women should cover their hair, shoulders and legs, and men should wear long trousers; loan dress is available at the entrance. A guide then walks you through the prayer hall, explains how people pray and answers questions at the end.

Outside, the mosque is best seen from the corniche side, where the cascading domes and two minarets reflect in the lagoon. Allow time for the walk along the water afterwards, with Al Noor Island visible across it.

If you cannot make a tour, come after sunset. The mosque is lit up in the evening, and the corniche is busy but calm, so it is a good family stroll. Dress modestly even outside prayer time, as this is an active place of worship.

Plan with confidence

Visit as a guest, not a spectator.

  • Dress modestly: cover shoulders, knees and, for women, hair
  • Check guided-tour times before you go
  • Avoid prayer times
  • Wear socks and slip-on shoes
