The short answer
Sharjah Art Museum: what visitors should know first
Go if you enjoy art and want a quiet indoor hour. It is not a big-ticket sight, so treat it as an add-on to the old town. Check what is on before you go, as temporary exhibitions change the visit a lot.

The story behind Sharjah Art Museum

Why it matters
Why Sharjah Art Museum is worth your time
Sharjah calls itself the cultural capital of the UAE, and the claim rests largely on its art institutions. This museum is the oldest public face of that. It moved to its current building in 1997, during the third Sharjah International Arts Biennial.
For visitors, it fills a gap: Gulf modern art is under-represented in guidebooks, and the museum gives a coherent first look. It also pairs well with the Islamic civilisation museum, since one shows historic calligraphy and the other shows how living artists use it.

Plan your visit
How to experience it
Treat the permanent galleries as the foundation and the temporary shows as the variable. The permanent collection brings together modern and contemporary work by artists from the UAE and across the Middle East, so it is a quick way to understand regional art beyond the souvenir shops.
The museum also keeps a permanent gallery of highlights from the Ruler's collection of orientalist art, which is worth seeing as a comparison. Nineteenth-century European painters imagined the region very differently from the way local artists show it, and you can see both approaches within the same building.
If you have time, look at what the Sharjah Art Foundation is showing in nearby buildings. The Sharjah Biennial, organised by the foundation, is among the museum's recurring exhibitions, and in biennial years the old town fills with extra venues.
