The short answer

Keladi Rameshwara Temple: what visitors should know first

Yes, if you like history and are doing the Keladi and Ikkeri circuit by car. It is a long day trip from Shivamogga, so combine it with Ikkeri and plan a lunch stop in Sagara.

History and context

The story behind Keladi Rameshwara Temple

Tradition links Keladi's founding to two brothers, Chavuda Gowda and Bhadra Gowda, who served the Vijayanagara king and founded the town along with the Rameshwara temple. The chiefs later moved their capital to Ikkeri. After the battle of Talikota the Keladi Nayakas founded an independent kingdom, which Hyder Ali annexed in 1763.

Why it matters

Why Keladi Rameshwara Temple is worth your time

Keladi is the place where the Keladi Nayaka story begins. The dynasty first grew from chiefs of this village, moved to Ikkeri and then Bidanur, and after the fall of Vijayanagara ruled an independent Malnad kingdom until Hyder Ali annexed it. The Rameshwara temple is the visible start of that chain.

For a visitor, it also shows how a regional dynasty built in a modest, practical style rather than with the grandeur of the great imperial capitals, and why Keladi pays off more for the story than for spectacle.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Keladi is best treated as one half of a Keladi and Ikkeri day, with Sagara as the base for lunch. At the village, the main building is a double temple dedicated to Rameshwara and Virabhadra, a large plain structure in the Hoysala-Dravida tradition. Walk the courtyard, look at the carved pillars and the entrance mantapa, and note the carvings of Nayaka-period motifs.

The village also has a small museum about the Keladi Nayakas, which is worth a short stop if open. Ask the priests for the local stories; the dynasty's rulers such as Shivappa Nayaka and Queen Chennamma are still remembered here.

If you are coming from Shivamogga, leave early, since the drive via Sagara takes close to two hours, and you will want time for Ikkeri and, if you are continuing, Jog Falls.
