The short answer

Tyavarekoppa Lion and Tiger Safari: what visitors should know first

Yes, as an easy family outing. You see big cats from a closed vehicle on a short guided drive, so it suits all ages, but it is a managed park, not wild forest, and some days it will be closed or quiet; confirm hours before you go.

History and context

The story behind Tyavarekoppa Lion and Tiger Safari

The safari at Tyavarekoppa began in 1988 and covers about 250 hectares near Shivamogga, roughly 275 km from Bengaluru. It was Karnataka's second safari park after Bannerghatta National Park. Tigers, lions and leopards are held in separate enclosures, with guided vehicles taking visitors through the big cat areas.

Why it matters

Why Tyavarekoppa Lion and Tiger Safari is worth your time

Tyavarekoppa is Karnataka's second safari park, after Bannerghatta. For families who cannot spend a day in rough forest, it offers an honest look at big cats without long trails, and it gives children a first sense of how large lions and tigers are.

It also plays a conservation role as a managed facility for rescued and captive animals. Visitors should view it as a place to learn about the animals rather than as a substitute for seeing them wild, which is where Shettihalli and Bhadra come in.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Plan this as a short morning or afternoon outing, around 10 km out of town on the Sagara road. Buy the safari ticket first, then use the waiting time to see the enclosures nearby. The park keeps Asiatic lions, Bengal tigers and Indian leopards in separate enclosures, and the guided vehicle drives through them so you see the cats at close range through protective glazing and mesh.

Beyond the cats, the park holds sloth bears, deer, crocodiles, porcupines, wild boar, langurs and many birds, plus a black panther on public view. The walk-around portion is on level paths but is not shaded all the way, so carry water.

Combine it with the Sakrebailu elephant camp on a morning when you want a lot of wildlife in one go, but keep expectations steady: this is a safari park with animals in managed enclosures, which is exactly why it works for small children and for visitors with limited mobility.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.

  • Confirm opening hours and the weekly closing day before you go
  • Buy the safari ticket first, then explore on foot
  • Carry water and a hat; shade is patchy
  • Do not feed or tap on enclosures
  • Combine with Sakrebailu on a morning trip
