Siargao is a teardrop-shaped island in the Philippine Sea, about 196 km south-east of Tacloban and part of Surigao del Norte province in the Caraga region. It covers roughly 437 square kilometres and is split into eight municipalities. Most visitors come for the surf at Cloud 9, which has made the island the Philippines' surfing capital, but the wider island is quieter: coconut groves, fishing towns, mangroves and a coast of reef and white sand.
For travellers from India the practical side matters more than the surf. There is no railway, the airport is small, ferries and flights must be planned around weather, and the island sits in the typhoon belt. Typhoon Rai struck on 16 December 2021 and caused severe damage, so check conditions and recent news before you travel, and make sure your insurance covers cancellations and medical evacuation.
The island works best at an easy pace. Base yourself in General Luna for food, tours and surf lessons. Take one boat day to the nearby islands such as Guyam and Naked Island, and one road day to Magpupungko Rock Pools in Pilar, timed to the tide. Longer excursions, such as Sohoton Cove on Bucas Grande, demand a full day and good fitness.
Food is seafood-led, and vegetarian eating is easiest in General Luna's cafes, several of which have plant-based menus. Indian restaurants are not a feature, and I did not find a verified Jain kitchen. Plan to manage with the cafes, your accommodation and a few simple dishes, as set out below.
