Why it matters
Why Ewam India Buddhist Monastery is worth your time
Ewam India Buddhist Monastery belongs to the Nyingma school of Tibetan Buddhism, and it is the primary Indian seat of the Ewam organisation. It is a newer, larger complex than the older Tibetan sites in the region and shows how traditional monastic design is being built afresh on the plains.
For travellers, it is a chance to see Tibetan monastic painting and architecture in one place without going up to the hills. It also adds a second, quite different Buddhist experience to a visit to Salugara, which is one reason the two sit well together.

How to experience it
Ewam is a place to look at things slowly. The building is a seven-storey structure in traditional Tibetan monastic style, with a brownish-red exterior, red and gold pillars and a gold-painted roof with carved creatures along its edges. Inside are meditating Buddha statues and wall and ceiling paintings in the Tibetan style. A circular yard sits in front, and prayer wheels run around a circular path on the first floor.
On arrival, take a minute outside to look at the whole facade before going in. Inside, speak quietly, remove shoes where signs ask, and walk clockwise around prayer wheels as others do. If monks are chanting, stand at the back and do not interrupt. Photography rules vary by hall, so ask before you point a camera at paintings or statues.
Ewam sits on a narrow, bumpy road near the Bengal Safari area, so go by car rather than on foot. It combines well with Salugara Monastery earlier in the morning and with the wild animals park in the afternoon.

Visit as a guest, not a spectator.
