Sri Mariamman Temple: what visitors should know first

Yes, it is the most important Hindu temple for Indian visitors in Chinatown. Visit in the morning, take off your shoes, and combine it with the Buddha Tooth Relic Temple and a hawker lunch nearby.

History and context

The story behind Sri Mariamman Temple

The temple was founded in 1827 by Naraina Pillai. The present six-tier gopuram dates from 1925, replacing a three-tier tower from 1903, and was restored in the 1960s. The temple became a National Monument in 1973.

Why it matters

Why Sri Mariamman Temple is worth your time

Sri Mariamman Temple was founded in 1827 by Naraina Pillai, a government clerk from Penang, only eight years after the East India Company set up its settlement in Singapore. That makes it the oldest Hindu temple in the country. It was gazetted a National Monument on 6 July 1973.

Its position in Chinatown is a reminder that early Singapore was a port where Tamil, Chinese and Malay communities lived within a few streets of one another. For Indian visitors it offers a familiar South Indian temple in an unfamiliar setting, and it is a convenient stop on a Chinatown walk.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Enter through the gopuram, as visitors are expected to, and leave your shoes at the stand by the entrance. The gopuram has six tiers of plaster figures of Hindu deities, built in its present form in 1925 and restored in the 1960s. The main hall is dedicated to Mariamman, with Rama and Murugan as secondary deities. Walk the circuit slowly.

If you are travelling around the end of October or in early November, the Theemithi, or firewalking, festival takes place about a week before Deepavali, and the temple is busy. At other times the temple is calm, and the priests perform regular pujas that visitors can watch from the sides.

Chinatown surrounds the temple, so you can easily continue to the Buddha Tooth Relic Temple, a few minutes' walk down South Bridge Road, and to the hawker centres nearby.

Plan with confidence

Visit as a guest, not a spectator.

  • Take shoes off before the entrance
  • Use the main doors
  • Check festival dates if you want to avoid crowds
  • Dress modestly
