1 day in Sitamarhi

  1. 01

Day 1: Two Sita temples and a Shiva shrine

Start at Janaki Sthan in the town centre in the early morning and spend a few minutes beside Urvija Kund. Hire a car or auto-rickshaw to Punaura Dham, about 5 km west, and spend about two hours at the temple and Janaki Kund. Have an early lunch and rest, then drive to Haleshwar Sthan in the late afternoon. Ask your driver to confirm the route, since published distances differ.

Guides for the stops on these routes

Pacing

Pacing a Sitamarhi trip for parents and children

  • Do one major temple per morning and rest after lunch; afternoons are tiring for much of the year.
  • Carry a light stole or cotton shawl and wear socks for the walk to temple gates; stone courtyards get hot by mid-morning.
  • Avoid Janaki Navami, Vivah Panchami and Ram Navami if crowds are a concern; weekdays are calmer.
  • Hire a car with driver for Punaura Dham, Haleshwar Sthan and Panth Pakar rather than relying on shared rides.
  • Carry necessary medicines, a basic first-aid kit and bottled water; medical facilities outside the town are limited.
  • Heat: April to June is hot, with mean daily highs of about 36 to 38 degrees Celsius at nearby Darbhanga. Visit temples in the first hours after sunrise and rest from late morning.
