Why it matters

Why Dainthlen Falls is worth your time

Dainthlen is a good example of how legend and landscape are tied together in the Khasi Hills. The Thlen story is about an evil serpent that demanded human sacrifice, and local accounts place its defeat at this spot. You do not have to take the legend literally to appreciate that places like this carry memory, as well as scenery.

It is also one of the more accessible waterfalls in the Sohra area, so it gives a flavour of the plateau's falls without a long trek. In the monsoon the sound is considerable, and in winter the flow is modest.

How to experience it

Dainthlen takes its name from the Thlen of Khasi legend, a mythical serpent said to have been killed by the people of ancient Sohra on a wide flat rock overlooking the water. Visitors are shown marks on the rock that are described as traces of the story. The falls drop about 80 to 90 metres and are strongest during the monsoon, when the water thunders down the rock.

The approach is a short walk over uneven ground and rock. Mind your footing: the surfaces are slippery in wet weather, and children need close supervision at any edge. The flat rock is a good place to sit, look and listen, and a picnic spot for local families.

The trail to Wei Sawdong Falls begins near here, so the two can be combined by those who are fit. Otherwise, Dainthlen is an easy stop to add between Thangkharang Park and the return to Shillong.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.
