The short answer
Best areas to stay in Somnath
- 01
Somnath town (near the temple)
Best for: Pilgrims and those who want to be within walking distance of the temple and beach
Most hotels and guest houses cluster around the temple and seafront. Walking distance to the shrine, with easy access to evening aarti. Trade-offs: narrow lanes, limited dining variety, and crowds during festival times. Good for atmosphere, practical for access.
- 02
Veraval (10–15 km away)
Best for: Travellers who want more amenities, dining options and a quieter evening
The larger town has more hotels, restaurants and markets. A 20–30 minute auto or car ride to Somnath. Less pilgrim-focused, more of a working city feel. Reasonable for a base if you prefer more choice and fewer crowds.
- 03
Near Triveni Sangam (3–4 km east of the main temple)
Best for: Those seeking a quieter, more contemplative setting
A few small guest houses sit near Triveni Sangam. Quieter than Somnath town, with river access. Requires a vehicle for temple visits and dining. Good for meditative stays, less practical for logistics.
- 04
Junagadh (70 km away, as a regional base)
Best for: Travellers spending 3+ days exploring the wider region
Larger city with more hotel variety, from budget to mid-range. Makes sense if you are combining Somnath with Girnar temples, Uparkot Fort and the zoo. Trade-off: longer drives to Somnath for evening aarti if you want to include it.

Before you book
What to check when booking for older travellers
- Ask for a lift, or a ground-floor room — many heritage hotels have steps and no lift.
- Check how far the hotel is from the sights you care about, in minutes by road, not kilometres.
- Prefer free cancellation until close to the date, in case plans or health change.
- Look for 24-hour reception, in-house dining and a doctor-on-call policy.
- Read recent reviews for noise — old-city streets and wedding venues can be loud late.

Comfort notes for Somnath
- The temple is level and has seating areas, but crowds can build during peak hours (7–9 am, 6–8 pm). Go early or in off-peak afternoons to avoid being jostled.
- The climate is harsh from April to May (40+°C). Visit in winter (December–February) or accept that midday rest (1 pm–4 pm) is non-negotiable in warmer months.
- Triveni Sangam and Prabhas Patan involve modest walking on uneven ground; wear good shoes and a hat. Bhalka is a longer drive (50+ km each way) and is better as a half-day trip rather than a full outing.
- Hire a car and driver for the entire stay rather than relying on autos. It provides shade, a rest place and flexibility. A full day's car hire is inexpensive and worth every rupee.
