Thajiwas is the most visited natural sight near Sonamarg, and for many travellers it is their first close look at a Himalayan glacier without committing to a multi-day trek. Its accessibility, a short pony ride from a town on a paved highway, is unusual for glacial terrain in Kashmir, where most glaciers require two or three days of walking to reach.

That same accessibility has brought problems. Two collapses in 2024, one of which killed a visitor, made clear that the ice is unstable and shifting, a pattern likely worsened by warming summers and heavy footfall. Local guides and pony handlers now keep visitors to designated viewing points, and the site is a useful reminder, ahead of any glacier visit in Kashmir, that these are moving, working landscapes rather than static scenery.

How to experience it

Thajiwas Glacier sits above Sonamarg town, reached by a walking track or pony ride that begins near Thajiwas Park, about 3 km from the main bazaar. Most visitors hire a pony for the climb, since the path gains height quickly and can be muddy or snow-covered depending on the month. The ride takes 30-45 minutes each way, with roughly an hour to look around once you arrive. Ponies are arranged informally between handlers rather than through a booking desk, so expect to negotiate the fare before you start rather than after.

Once up, the glacier is a broad tongue of grey-white ice sitting below jagged peaks, with meltwater streams threading through loose scree at its base. In 2024 two separate sections of the ice collapsed within weeks of each other, one of them fatally, so local guides now steer visitors to marked viewing paths rather than onto the glacier itself. Snow can persist on the higher slopes even in July, and many visitors carry a change of shoes for the walk back down.

If you are short on time or unsteady on a pony, the view from lower in Thajiwas Park, without going all the way up, still gives a reasonable sense of the glacier and the peaks around it.
