Plan 01
1 day in South Malé Atoll
- 01
Day 1: Guraidhoo by boat
Take a morning speedboat from Malé to Guraidhoo, which takes roughly three quarters of an hour. Walk the village and harbour, and join a guided snorkelling or sandbank trip arranged through a local operator. Return by afternoon boat. Cover shoulders and knees away from the designated swimming area, and confirm the return boat time before you leave Malé.
Stop Time needed Walking Best time Guraidhoo Half a day as a visit; 2-3 nights if you stay on the island Easy December to March, when the north-east monsoon brings drier weather and calmer seas Pace: All the stops today are easy on the legs.
Plan 02
2 days in South Malé Atoll
- 01
Day 1: Arrive and settle at a resort
Take the resort speedboat from the airport jetty. Spend the afternoon on the beach and house reef, with a short snorkel at a depth where you can stand. Eat at the resort and ask the kitchen about the next day's vegetarian options.
- 02
Day 2: Reef and excursion
Do a guided snorkel or a discover-scuba session with the resort dive centre, then rest through the midday heat. In the afternoon, take a resort excursion or a spa treatment, and leave a buffer before your flight.
Plan 03
3 days in South Malé Atoll
- 01
Day 1: Arrive and settle
Take the speedboat transfer, check in and walk the island. Book the dive centre or spa for the next two days. Keep the first swim short and check currents with the staff.
- 02
Day 2: Dive and snorkel
Certified divers can ask the dive centre about Guraidhoo Kandu or Kandooma Thila; others can snorkel the house reef. Rest in the afternoon.
Stop Time needed Walking Best time Guraidhoo Half a day as a visit; 2-3 nights if you stay on the island Easy December to March, when the north-east monsoon brings drier weather and calmer seas Guraidhoo Kandu Half a day including boat time Moderate Dry season (December to March) for calmer sea; the dive centre decides on the day by tide Pace: Moderate walking today — plan a sit-down break between stops.
With parents at Guraidhoo Kandu: Boat entry and exit, currents and cold-water fatigue make this demanding even for fit older travellers. A medical check and a conversation with the dive centre are sensible before any dive; snorkelling from a boat with a float is gentler.
- 03
Day 3: A local island visit
If your resort offers it, visit Guraidhoo for a few hours to see a Maldivian village. Dress modestly, carry some cash, and return in time for a relaxed evening and an easy departure the next morning.

Pacing
Pacing a South Malé Atoll trip for parents and children
- Choose a resort with a short speedboat transfer and flat paths; ask about steps, handrails and buggies at the jetty.
- Travel insurance matters. Each inhabited island has a basic health centre, and serious cases go to Malé; dive injuries may need a decompression chamber at Bandos.
- Ask the resort in writing about vegetarian, Jain or other diet needs before you pay, and carry regular medicines with you.
- Heat and sun are strong year-round. Plan reef time in the morning, rest at midday and use shade, hats and rash vests.
- Do not swim in channels or strong currents; Wikivoyage notes tidal currents cause drownings each year.
- Use boat steps and the jetty slowly, and keep your passport and medicines in a dry bag.
