The short answer
Sikharam: what visitors should know first
A good short outing by car if you have an hour to spare. Go for the view and the quiet, not for a big sight. The road is winding, and the shrine itself is modest.

Why it matters
Why Sikharam is worth your time
In pilgrim tradition, seeing the Sikharam is considered meritorious, and the Skanda Purana is quoted as saying that one can attain liberation merely by seeing it. Whether or not that matters to you, the ridge is a natural counterpart to the temple down in the town.
It also gives an overview that you cannot get from the compound: how the town sits in the folds of the hills, with forest on every side. For travellers who cannot take on the steps at Pathala Ganga, it is a good alternative way to feel the landscape.

Plan your visit
How to experience it
Drive up in the morning or late afternoon, when the light is soft and the ridge is cooler. A short walk leads to the shrine, with railings and viewpoints looking over the forest and, on clear days, towards the reservoir and the temple gopurams in the distance.
Allow around an hour including the drive. Do not expect a large complex; the pleasure is the height, the breeze and the sense of the Nallamala ridge. Monkeys gather at the site, so keep food out of sight and hold bags firmly.
If you also plan Hatakeshwaram and Phaladhara Panchadhara, combine them in one half-day loop with a car and driver.
