History and context
The story behind Srivilliputhur Andal Temple
Vatapatrasayi's temple is argued to date from the 8th century, with the earliest inscriptions from the 10th century. Records span the Chola, Pandya and Vijayanagara periods, and Thirumalai Nayak renovated the temples in the 17th century. The temple was under Travancore's care until 1850 and is now administered by the Tamil Nadu HR&CE Department.

Why it matters
Why Srivilliputhur Andal Temple is worth your time
Srivilliputhur's identity rests on this temple. Andal is the only woman among the twelve Alvars, the Tamil Vaishnava poet-saints, and her verses are among the most recited in Tamil devotional life. The temple preserves the place tradition names as her birthplace, so it draws pilgrims from across Tamil Nadu and beyond.
The tower is also a civic symbol. Its image appears on the emblem of the Tamil Nadu government. Combined with the sculpture, inscriptions and living worship, it makes the temple one of the most meaningful stops in southern Tamil Nadu for visitors interested in the Bhakti tradition rather than just architecture.

How to experience it
The temple is a single large complex. Enter through the tower, the 192-foot rajagopuram, and walk the corridors to the shrine of Vatapatrasayi, Vishnu reclining on a banyan leaf, and the neighbouring shrine of Andal with Rangamannar. Take your time in the pillared halls and watch the worship, which follows a set cycle of six daily rituals.
Andal is central here. Tradition holds that Periyalvar found her as an infant beneath a tulasi plant in the temple garden and raised her; she later composed the Thiruppavai and the Nachiar Tirumozhi, which are still recited in the month of Margazhi (mid-December to mid-January). Ask a priest or guide to explain the garland story: Andal wore garlands before they went to the god, and Vishnu is said to have asked for the worn ones.
The temple's busiest festival is Adi Pooram in July-August, Andal's birthday, when the temple car is drawn through the streets. Visit outside festival days for a calm experience, and buy the town's palkova from shops near the temple afterwards.
