Day 1: Andal temple and the town
Start at the Andal temple early, spending about two hours among its shrines and corridors. Walk or drive to the Madavar Vilagam Vaidyanathar temple, about a kilometre south. Have lunch in town and buy palkova from shops near the temple before you leave.
Stop Time needed Walking Best time Madavar Vilagam Vaidyanathar Temple 1 hour Easy Morning or late afternoon Pace: All the stops today are easy on the legs.
Plan 02
2 days in Srivilliputhur
- 01
Day 1: Andal temple and Shiva temple
As above, with a rest in the afternoon.
- 02
Day 2: Forest edge and a hill temple
Visit Shenbaga Thoppu, the forest edge of the Grizzled Squirrel Wildlife Sanctuary, early in the morning, then drive towards Kattalagar Koil if you are fit enough for the walk.
Stop Time needed Walking Best time Grizzled Squirrel Wildlife Sanctuary Half a day at the forest edge; a full day or overnight for a guided trek Demanding Cooler months, roughly November to February; avoid peak summer when water is scarce Kattalagar Koil 2 to 4 hours depending on how far you walk Demanding Cooler months, early morning Pace: Grizzled Squirrel Wildlife Sanctuary and Kattalagar Koil involve a lot of walking or steps — do them early, and keep the rest of the day light.
With parents at Grizzled Squirrel Wildlife Sanctuary: There are no roads inside the sanctuary, so any real visit involves walking on forest paths in heat and humidity, with few toilets or seats. Older travellers should keep to the forest edge near Shenbaga Thoppu and the Petchiamman shrine at the entrance.
With parents at Kattalagar Koil: Around 246 steps lead up to the temple and devotees reportedly walk several kilometres from Meenkuthi Parai. This is demanding for older travellers and in hot weather. Consider sending a fitter family member while you wait at the base.

Pacing
Pacing a Srivilliputhur trip for parents and children
- Visit the Andal temple early, when the stone floors are cool and queues short.
- Avoid Adi Pooram and Margazhi peak days if you dislike crowds.
- Skip Kattalagar Koil and Sathuragiri if walking is difficult; the town temples are enough.
- Use a car for the Vaidyanathar temple, the sanctuary edge and the hills.
- Carry water and a hat; there is little shade in temple courtyards.
- Buy palkova in small quantities, as it is rich.
