Why it matters
Why Sathuragiri Hills and Sundara Mahalingam Temple is worth your time
Sathuragiri is one of the better-known hill pilgrimages in southern Tamil Nadu, drawing devotees mainly on moon and Pradosham days. Reaching the temple on foot is part of the devotion, and the forest setting is far from the town temples.
It also offers a view of the dry Ghats interior that most visitors to Srivilliputhur never see. The effort and the restrictions mean few casual tourists come, which keeps it quiet but also makes preparation essential. Treat it as a planned expedition with a start before dawn, a clear turn-back time and enough water for everyone, rather than as a quick add-on to a temple day in town.

How to experience it
Sathuragiri, also called Chathuragiri or Sundara Mahalingam, is a hill pilgrimage in the Western Ghats at about 995 m. The common trekking routes begin on the Thaniparai side near Watrap in Virudhunagar district; a third route starts from the T. Krishnapuram side in Madurai district. Men and women may both trek.
The route goes through forest to the Sundara Mahalingam Shiva temple. Municipal information puts the uphill trek at about 8 km from Thaniparai, and Thaniparai is about 28 km from Srivilliputhur. Entry at the base is allowed only in the early morning, so you must start at dawn.
Carry plenty of water, food, a torch and rain protection, and wear proper shoes. There are no published facilities, and monsoon streams can swell. Check the date against the forest department's schedule, as extended hours apply on special days. Do not attempt it in the afternoon heat.
