The short answer
Gopi Talav: what visitors should know first
Go for an easy evening outing, not for sightseeing depth. The lake is level, lit and lively, and the surrounding streets have old-city food. Check current opening times and any entry charge, since the redevelopment is run on a concession.
History and context
The story behind Gopi Talav
The lake was built around 1510 by Malik Gopi, a merchant and governor of Surat under the Gujarat Sultanate. In 1573 Akbar set up a military camp near it during the siege of Surat, and the English traveller Peter Mundy called it the Great Tancke of Surat in 1628.
By 1674 the lake had been neglected and had dried up, and by 1717 it was in ruins. The Surat Municipal Corporation renovated it from 2012, and the first phase was inaugurated on 5 December 2015.

Why it matters
Why Gopi Talav is worth your time
Gopi Talav is a rare case where a lake explains a city's founding story. Tradition names a merchant and governor, Malik Gopi, as the builder around 1510, and the Gopipura neighbourhood carries his name. Visitors in the 17th century described it as the Great Tank of Surat, and Emperor Akbar's army camped near it during the siege of 1573.
The lake later dried up and fell into ruin, and it was brought back by the Surat Municipal Corporation in a redevelopment completed in the 2010s. It is now a place where Surat gathers in the evenings, which tells you as much about the modern city as any museum.

- 02

Families, joggers and groups gather as the lights come on, which is the best time to see local life.
Plan your visit
How to experience it
Arrive in the late afternoon so you see the lake in daylight and stay as the lights come on. Walk the circuit slowly: the lake is about 212 metres across, so a full loop takes less time than you expect, and the pleasure is in the sitting, the fountains and the people around you.
The redevelopment divided the area into themed zones covering diamonds, food, environment, history, communal harmony, textiles and Surat nu Jaman, the city's picnic tradition. You do not need to see them all. Pick the history and food zones and skip the rest if energy is short.
The lanes of Gopipura around the lake are good for a snack stop afterwards. Eat from busy stalls, choose hot dishes, and bring water. If you are visiting with children, they will enjoy the fountains and open space more than the older sights.
Plan with confidence
Small decisions that make the visit easier.
