Plan 01
1 day in Tarapith
- 01
Day 1: Darshan, shrine and river
Reach Tarapith early, ideally before the queue builds, and visit the Tara temple first, leaving footwear and bags outside. Afterwards walk to the Jivit Kund, then to Bamakhepa's shrine and, if you wish, the edge of the cremation ground. Spend a few quiet minutes by the Dwarka river. Have lunch in a simple local eatery and rest. If you have the energy, end with the lanes of offering stalls before the evening return.

Guides for the stops on these routes
Pacing
Pacing a Tarapith trip for parents and children
- Visit on a weekday morning and avoid Tuesdays, new-moon nights and festival days, when the queues can be very long.
- Stay close to the temple lane so you can walk to darshan without arranging transport, and keep a companion with you in the crowd.
- Ask the temple staff on arrival about the route for elderly visitors; it is usually shorter than the main queue.
- Carry water, a hat and a light towel, as the queue can mean standing for an hour or more, especially from March to October.
- Skip the cremation ground if the setting would be distressing; the temple and Bamakhepa's shrine are the main parts of the visit.
- Keep cash in small notes for offerings and priests' fees, and agree amounts before any ritual begins.
