Why it matters
Why Kolia Bhomora Setu is worth your time
The bridge was built between 1981 and 1987 and opened by Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, and it is 3,015 metres long. Before it opened, crossing the Brahmaputra here meant ferries, so the bridge changed how the north bank connected with the rest of Assam.
Its name honours Kolia Bhomora Phukan, an Ahom general who is said to have planned a Brahmaputra bridge in the 18th century, but died before it could be built. The modern bridge therefore completes an idea two centuries old, which is a satisfying note on which to leave Tezpur.

Plan your visit
How to experience it
Think of the bridge as a viewing opportunity, not a destination. The best views are from the Tezpur riverbank and from higher ground nearby, including the Bhairabi Temple approach, where the bridge forms the backdrop. Go at sunrise or sunset when the river is gold and the traffic is lighter.
If you cross by car, ask your driver to slow in a safe place or simply look out as you go. The Brahmaputra is very wide here, and the bridge's length gives a real sense of scale. You will notice a second, parallel bridge opened in 2022.
Do not stop on the carriageway for photographs. The road is busy NH-715, and the safe choice is the riverbank or a hilltop viewpoint. Pair it with Ganeshghat and a short walk by the water.
Plan with confidence
Small decisions that make the visit easier.
- View from the riverbank, not the carriageway
